Montecristi

The jewel of the northwest, the border province of Montecristi presents a wild and striking landscape ripe for off-the-beaten-track adventures. Rice plantations, banana fields, goats and giant cacti stand sentry roadside, leading towards salt ponds and onto limestone cliffs hugging a wave-rich Atlantic Ocean. Around this part desert and part Mediterranean-like scenery, thick mangrove tunnels give way to fresh lagoons, while offshore cayes teem with migratory birds, and offer secluded white sand beaches.

There is nothing better than spending time relaxing on a beautiful beach! Monte Cristi has a coastline full of beaches. El Morro beach is the most famous. However, there are many other amazing beaches along the coast that you can enjoy. Juan de Bolaños Beach is a beach on the Malecón. While La Playita is a small beach in front of the El Morro Eco Hotel. Also, there are two beaches on Costa Verde. The first beach is in front of El Cayito. The second, the beach is at the end of the road. Finally, don’t forget the Farm! It is an isolated beach on the east side of Morro.

Is a coastal city with many natural estuaries. Also, it is hot all year round. These conditions are perfect for endemic and migratory birds. Consequently, Monte Cristi is very attractive for bird watching. Late April to early September are the best times to see seabirds nesting. You will find Brown Noddy, Sooty Tern and Shy Tern nesting in the Seven Brothers Keys during these months.

The Monte Cristi coral reef is the largest reef formation in the Dominican Republic. It is almost 40 miles (64.2 km) of barrier reef. The bay contains almost 90% of all the living coral reefs in the country. You will find more than 700 species of coral in the reef layers. Diving and snorkeling at Monte Crisiti is a paradise for lovers of reefs and wrecks.
